Other Object (Publication) Types

Apart from group publications and single publications, three other types of publications are available in the dLibra system: planned publications, publications without content, and removed publications.

Planned Object

Planned publications (planned objects) are used for presenting library digitization plans. The mechanism of planned publications facilitates cooperation between various digital libraries (which can see what the other libraries are planning) and informs library website users about the library digitization plans. A planned publication does not have content, and after it has been added, it becomes a standard publication (the first release of the publication is automatically created). When a planned publication is created, some basic information about the future publication is added, for example: metadata, assignment to a collection, and users’ publication permissions. After the content has been added, those properties are copied to appropriate elements of the created publication (for instance, the metadata are copied to the first release of the publication).

Object Without Content

A publication without content (an object without content) is created by removing the content (files) of a standard publication. It is a one-way operation, which means that once it has been carried out, the content cannot be added back to the publication. A publication without content cannot be searched or found on any list on the library Internet sites; it is only available at its permanent link; every publication has such a link. A publication without content retains all properties of a publication (such as: metadata, number of releases, assignment to a collection, etc.), so that users who have the permanent link to it are not confused by the missing, removed content. Those users will be informed that the content of the publication has been removed, and all information related to the publication will be displayed (off course, it will not be possible to browse the content of the publication after it has been removed). Publications without content are visible in the Editor and Administrator Application so that it is clear which publications have been deprived of their content and what their properties are.

That mechanism may come in handy when the author of a publication in the digital library decides not to make it available there any more. In such a situation, the editor can remove the content of the publication and state the reason for that. New readers will not be able to find that publication in the library, and the readers who have a link to it will receive appropriate information.

Removed Object

Removed publications (removed objects) are publications deleted from the system. They are not visible in the Editor and Administrator Application, and they cannot be found in the Reader Application (through a search or on the publication list). The remaining information about the publication are stored in the system

in case of a reader having the permanent link to it. After visiting the address, the reader will see the remaining information about the publication and the information about the date of the complete deletion of the publication.

Normally, a published item should never be completely deleted from a digital library. Complete deletion is only useful during tests or similar activities

Inne rodzaje obiektów (publikacji)

Poza publikacjami grupowymi i zwykłymi publikacjami w systemie dLibra mogą znajdować się jeszcze trzy inne typy publikacji - publikacje planowane, publikacje bez treści oraz publikacje usunięte.

Obiekt planowany

Publikacje planowane (obiekty planowane) służą do przedstawiania planów digitalizacji biblioteki. Mechanizm publikacji planowanych ułatwia współpracę między różnymi bibliotekami cyfrowymi (biblioteki znają plany innych bibliotek) oraz informuje użytkowników stron internetowych biblioteki o jej planach digitalizacji. Publikacja planowana nie posiada treści, a po jej dodaniu staje się zwykłą publikacją (automatycznie tworzone jest pierwsze wydanie publikacji). Tworząc publikację planowaną podaje się pewne podstawowe informacje związane z publikacją, którą w przyszłości się stanie. Są to między innymi metadane, przypisanie do kolekcji, prawa użytkowników do publikacji. Po dodaniu treści właściwości te są kopiowane do odpowiednich elementów powstałej publikacji (np. metadane kopiowane są do pierwszego wydania publikacji).

Obiekt bez treści

Publikacja bez treści (obiekt bez treści) powstaje poprzez usunięcie ze zwykłej publikacji jej treści (plików). Operacja ta jest jednokierunkowa, zatem nie można po jej wykonaniu ponownie dodać treści do publikacji. Publikacji bez treści nie można wyszukać ani odnaleźć na żadnej liście na stronach internetowych biblioteki, dostępna jest ona tylko pod odnośnikiem (linkiem) stałego dostępu, który posiada każda publikacja. Publikacja bez treści zachowuje wszystkie wartości właściwości publikacji (takie jak metadane, liczbę wydań, przypisanie do kolekcji, itd.) przez co użytkownicy, którzy mają zapisany stały link dostępu do publikacji nie będą zdezorientowani brakiem publikacji po usunięciu jej treści. Otrzymają oni informację o tym, że publikacja została pozbawiona treści i wyświetlone zostaną wszystkie informacje związane z publikacją (oczywiście nie będzie możliwe przeglądanie treści takiej publikacji ponieważ została ona usunięta). Publikacje bez treści widoczne są w aplikacji redaktora i administratora po to, by było jasne, które publikacje zostały pozbawione treści i jakie mają właściwości.

Mechanizm ten może być przydatny w sytuacjach, kiedy autor publikacji znajdującej się w bibliotece cyfrowej permanentnie rezygnuje z udostępniania swojego dzieła w bibliotece cyfrowej. Redaktor może w takiej sytuacji usunąć treść publikacji i podać powód usunięcia. Nowi czytelnicy nie będą mogli odnaleźć takiej publikacji w bibliotece, a ci którzy mają odnośniki do niej otrzymają stosowną informację.

Obiekt usunięty

Publikacje usunięte (obiekty usunięte) to takie publikacje, które skasowano z systemu. Nie są one widoczne w aplikacji redaktora i administratora, nie można ich odnaleźć w aplikacji czytelnika (wyszukując lub na liście publikacji). W systemie przechowywane są szczątkowe informacje związane z taką publikacją w razie gdyby czytelnik posiadał stały odnośnik dostępu do niej. Po wejściu na stronę stałego odnośnika publikacji usuniętej, czytelnik otrzymuje szczątkowe informacje związane z publikacją wraz z informacją o dacie całkowitego usunięcia publikacji.

W normalnym działaniu biblioteki cyfrowej nie powinno się usuwać całkowicie raz opublikowanych pozycji. Całkowite usuwanie publikacji przydatne jest jedynie podczas wykonywania testów, czy innych tego typu czynnościach.
